Comfort Foods

Today’s writing challenge is my top five comfort foods. I thought it was fitting since we are self-isolating and comfort food is a useful tool 😉

  1. Chocolate. Anything chocolate. I can’t eat dairy products so I mostly eat dark chocolate since it’s hard to find any chocolate that isn’t dark chocolate and is still dairy free. Chocolate with hazelnuts is my favorite. Or pecans. Hot chocolate. Mocha coffees. Chocolate pie. Oddly though, if it’s cake or ice cream I prefer other flavors over chocolate, even vanilla.
  2. Gummy candies or fruit snacks. I don’t know why but they’ve always helped calm me, especially when I used to get car sick. So they are comfort foods to me, even as an adult.
  3. Soups. Maybe because you often eat soup when you’re sick, but soups and stews are always good comfort foods to me. Potato soup is especially good as comfort food.
  4. Pasta. It’s filling. It’s easy. It’s inexpensive (relatively inexpensive even when you have to eat gluten free like I do). And it’s comforting. Any pasta. With marinara. With a spicy garlic sauce. With a cheesy sauce. With butter and garlic.
  5. Peanut butter and sugar on toast. It’s from my childhood. It’s a very personal comfort food that my mom used to make me. Just make toast, put peanut butter on it (I use chunky peanut butter now but as a kid it was regular) and then lightly sprinkle some granulated sugar over the peanut butter. You might already know it. It’s not that uncommon. But I’ve found some who have considered it odd, or at least unknown, so I thought I’d describe it.
