Today’s writing challenge is your favorite tree. I’ve always been fascinated by trees, they are often a subject of any art I create, so I thought this one would be a good subject.
I have more than one favorite tree. The house I grew up in had many trees. There weren’t quite as many when we left the house (some were removed before I even had a memory of them existing) but three of them are still in my favorites.
We had cherry trees in the backyard. One year we even harvested the cherries (usually we left them for the wildlife). Eventually the cherry trees were removed, leaving the yard more open, but less shaded. Cherry trees are still one of my favorites.
There was a maple tree in the front yard. It was a strong tree that helped shade the yard and house. We used to play with the little helicopter seeds, throwing them up in the air and watching them spin back down. The maple tree was still there when we left. Maple trees are still one of my favorites.
We had two birch trees in the front yard. They ended up getting a disease that caused one of them to fall in the middle of the night. It managed to avoid our house, the neighbor’s house and any vehicles somehow. And somehow my sister slept through the loud, earthshaking fall. We cut the other one down before it could fall. But while they were there, they were my favorite. Birch trees are still my favorite tree.
